Marbella Ranch LP bought land at El Mirage Road and Northern Avenue east of Luke from El Paso Natural Gas Co. for $11.7 million and plans to develop more than 1,200 homes on 250 acres. El Paso had previously wanted to build an underground natural gas storage facility on the land.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and Luke officials approved a zoning change in June that allows for the development and precipitated the sale.

County officials say it will not encroach on the base.
