Will Humble is stepping down as director of the state Department of Health Services after 23 years with the agency.

Humble said his resignation was voluntary, effective March 3.

Gov. Doug Ducey accepted the resignation, saying through his spokesman that he “greatly appreciated” Humble’s service and wished him well.

Humble was one of the first agency directors Ducey retained when he took office last month.

Gov. Jan Brewer promoted Humble from assistant director to agency head in January 2009, almost immediately after she took office. Humble joined the agency in 1992 and moved up the ranks. During his tenure, he oversaw programs ranging from disease prevention to a state environmental-health survey to, most recently, implementation of the voter-approved medical-marijuana program.
