A bill at the Arizona Legislature would block Phoenix — and other cities — from requiring building owners to disclose their energy use.
Senate Bill 1241 was previously a bill related to the state’s Medicaid system but it has been changed completely via a so-called striker amendment to specifically prohibit cities from requiring energy use disclosures from commercial and apartment landlords.
Phoenix is considering an energy disclosure ordinance modeled after ones in New York, Seattle, San Francisco and other big cities. The rule would apply to approximately 1,500 commercial buildings of 50,000 square feet or more.
