Experimental projects could shake up downtown Mesa

With less than a month to go before light rail arrives in downtown Mesa, officials are working to make the city’s core a destination rather than just a stop along the way.

Mesa has partnered with the Neighborhood Economic Development Corp. and the Downtown Mesa Association to implement a series of experimental projects nicknamed the “Downtown Mesa Laboratory” that will tackle everything from extra-wide alleys to outdated colonnades.

The projects are meant to be “temporary, low cost and high impact,” and to serve as tests for future investment in downtown, according to the city.
