Gov. Doug Ducey’s first selection for the state’s next Supreme Court justice will come from a pool that includes six appellate judges and a public interest lawyer.
The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments sent the list to Ducey on Friday after interviewing nine applicants, posing questions to them to get insight into their legal thinking and to get a feel for them as people.
The list consists of Republicans Lawrence Winthrop, Samuel Thumma, Andrew Gould, and Kent Cattani; Democrats Michael Brown and Maurice Portley, and independent Clint Bolick. Most governors select judges of their own party, making it likely that Ducey will pick a fellow Republican.
