APS plans new solar plant near Red Rock

Arizona Public Service Co. plans to build and operate a new solar plant in southern Pinal County.

The Pinal County Planning and Zoning Commission has voted to recommend approval of a request by APS for an industrial use permit to construct and operate the solar photovoltaic power plant on a 623-acre parcel east of Interstate 10, 2 miles south of the Red Rock interchange.

Jim Piotrowski, director of solar generation for APS, told the planning commission that the project would only use 340 acres, leaving the rest of the parcel undisturbed as part of the company’s plan to safeguard local wildlife.
