Cost, terrain challenge Interstate 17 expansion, Arizona officials say

Accidents, closures and gridlock on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix continue to frustrate drivers, causing many to wonder what could be done to solve the problem.

Expanding the roadway between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point is one potential solution, but adding lanes is costly, and the area’s topography presents a challenge, transportation officials said.

On Sunday, southbound Interstate 17 north of Black Canyon City was closed for nearly nine hours after a collision involving up to 20 vehicles.
