Arizona water users better off without Navajo Generating Station coal plant, say officials

Metro Phoenix won’t dry up without the Navajo Generating Station coal plant, which powers the Central Arizona Project canal and is slated for closure, officials said Thursday.

In fact, water prices could go down on the massive aqueduct that brings Colorado River water to Phoenix and Tucson, executives from the CAP told board members during a special meeting.

The CAP canal supplies about half the water used in metro Phoenix, with the rest coming from the Salt and Verde rivers via the Salt River Project, and from groundwater pumping.
