Would Gold Canyon be interested in merging with city of Apache Junction? (Apparently not as much as AJ is interested in merging with Gold Canyon.)… Mayor Jeff Serdy: “If the city gets to 50,000 people, you get on a whole different level of funding… from the feds and much more state-backed matching revenue… ” And, at a “special” city council meeting held recently to discuss the matter, it must have seemed like most of those 50,000 were there. According to Apache Junction Independent: “Seats… were filled… [with people] along the walls and windows and many more were outside because the room was at capacity.” Read the coverage here: http://bit.ly/2mh5WoT

Arizona House passes compromise changes to GPLET property tax breaks. “The House-approved bill looks to limit the GPLET property tax breaks going forward to eight years. It does grandfather in some existing GPLET deals between cities, developers and businesses.” But does the “amended version of House Bill 2231″ go far enough to appease “[s]ome Valley cities and real estate groups [that] had opposed earlier incarnations of the bill”? Phoenix Business Journal. http://bit.ly/2l41mbB

Arizona House OKs bill limiting local elections to raise taxes. “The House gave preliminary approval… to a measure that says cities and counties can ask voters to increase taxes only every other year, and only at the regular election in November.” However, the ONLY thing that may come from the approval of HB 2495 “is a legal fight.” Find out why, in Howard Fischer’s report at Arizona Daily Star. http://bit.ly/2lOUHX2

GOP bill targets power of new Democratic Maricopa County Recorder. “Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes… could be stripped of his ability to run county elections as a result of legislation touted by [Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita]…. Fontes blasts [HB2179] as ‘political sour grapes’…  Ugenti-Rita argues her bill encourages good government….” AZCentral has the story: http://bit.ly/2mptHdj
