The imagery of Carmona in arms with members of Goldwater’s family at the feet of his statue underscores the bipartisan appeal Carmona is trying to strike in his campaign against U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake, who won the Republican nomination Tuesday.
“He embodies pretty much all of the principles that my father held,” Joanne Goldwater said at the Paradise Valley memorial. She specifically cited Carmona’s support for abortion rights and marriage rights for gay couples as central to her endorsement.
