[EDITORIAL] Development must consider Mesa airport

A second try at nailing down plans for a housing development near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has been worth the wait.

The Mesa City Council should approve plans for the development, on a portion of the old General Motors Proving Ground, and the accompanying annexation of nearly 1 square mile at its meeting today.

The path of these plans shows how residential development near Gateway can be so tricky.

Any residential development near the airport raises questions.

So, Mesa leaders expressed justifiable skepticism at the initial plans for the 484-acre Pacific Proving Grounds North, near Ellsworth and Ray roads.
