Gilbert mayoral forum touts aerospace industry

Regional momentum may help Gilbert’s growing aviation and aerospace sector play a greater role in the town’s quest for more high-wage jobs, officials say.

About 200 people packed Gilbert Town Council chambers last week for Mayor John Lewis’ semiannual “ambassador forum,” where officials discussed the region’s future in aerospace and aviation.

“What we do, we do together, in promoting Arizona, Greater Phoenix, our East Valley and Gilbert,” Lewis told the audience.

As the West Valley’s Luke Air Force Base prepares to train new F-35 fighter pilots, the Arizona Commerce Authority is making the state’s case to become one of six national testing areas for unmanned-commercial flight, officials said.
