Glendale mayoral candidates Jerry Weiers and Manuel Cruz have taken opposing stances on the sales tax reversal measure that’s headed for the city’s November ballot.
The measure asks voters to reverse a $125 million, five-year sales tax increase Glendale is relying on to plug budget gaps and pay for the first years of a $300 million Phoenix Coyotes arena deal.
Weiers, a Republican, wants to see the increase reversed. Cruz, a Democrat, does not. The two are squaring off for a runoff election in November. Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, who is retiring, backs Weiers in the race.
