A proposed ordinance aimed at correcting a situation where the Casa Grande Board of Adjustment has been unable to function because not enough members were at a meeting to meet city requirements gets its first hearing Thursday night before the Planning and Zoning Commission.
The meeting, open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 510 E. Florence Blvd.
Under the present rules, a vote on a variance request or an appeal from a city decision requires six of the seven board members, not just a majority of those present at a meeting. The board often does not have six members present, forcing delays in requests.
“Not only is this a difficult standard to meet, it cannot be met in cases where the board quorum for opening and holding the meeting consists of four or five board members,” the staff report says.
The proposed ordinance, which goes from the planning commission to the city council for a final vote, changes the Board of Adjustment voting requirement for variances or appeals to a simple majority of those present.
