A heated campaign is under way for political control in Legislative District 18, considered to be among the swing districts in the November general election.
The moderate-leaning district encompasses Ahwatukee and parts of Chandler, Tempe and Mesa. This is the first election cycle in the newly formed district, which has boundaries similar to those of the former District20.
District 18 has become a key battleground as Democrats attempt to chip away at the GOP’s supermajority. Fewer than 52 percent of voters supported Republicans in the 2008 and 2010 statewide elections, and about one-third are registered independents.
Sen. John McComish, a longtime legislator and former president of the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce, faces Democrat Janie Hydrick, an educator and a political newcomer.
The two have traded barbs.
