Orbital seeks trade provision for Gilbert

Space-systems manufacturer Orbital Sciences Corp. is working to bring Gilbert its first “foreign trade zone,” a technical designation that would help the company keep up with overseas competitors.

The company, which operates a manufacturing facility near Elliot and McQueen roads, earlier this month received Town Council approval of its plans. The proposed trade-zone adjustment now goes before the federal Foreign-Trade Zones Board for consideration.

If approved, Orbital Sciences would join Chandler’s Intel Corp. and Microchip, Glendale’s Conair Corp. and several other major companies in the Valley that benefit from the special designation.
