Green Valley residents object to proposed hospital

Santa Rita Springs is Green Valley Recreation’s largest social center.

A homeowners association and a committee overseeing a historic ranch property owned by Pima County are opposing a proposed hospital that would be the first in the growing southern Arizona retirement community of Green Valley.

Residents of the Springs at Santa Rita, northeast of the proposed hospital site, said in a letter to the county Planning and Zoning Commission that they believe the hospital would hurt their property values. They object to the height and size of the proposed $52 million project.

A committee overseeing the county-owned Canoa Ranch also sent a letter to county officials citing “several serious concerns” about the planned hospital. They cite vibration from medical helicopters that could damage ranch structures.

Meanwhile, county officials said that the developer faces fines for grading on the site without a permit, including grading land over an archaeological site.

The developer, McDowell Enterprises of Scottsdale, also may face a separate assessment if an investigation finds significant damage was done in grading land on adjacent county-owned Canoa Ranch property, said Carmine DeBonis Jr., county development services chief.
