The man who has played a key role in the development of Maricopa’s infrastructure is set to leave at the end of the year to take the reins of a nearby city.
With the recent departures of two other high-level staff members in the City’s Development Services department, the City will have much work ahead in reshaping a department that is critical to the growth and development of the city.
Billingsley, one of the City’s first employees, signed a contract Monday night to become the new city manager in Globe, beginning in January. A man of many hats for Maricopa, having started working as the transportation manager in 2005 and worked his way up to director of a wide-ranging department, Billingsley said he was encouraged by many to pursue the job in Globe, where his mother and stepfather reside.
“It’s something I’ve considered for a long time … and had opportunities in the past but chose not to act on them because they weren’t the right situation,” he said. “I got a bunch of phone calls from a variety of people telling me I had to apply for this job.”
One of those was former Globe mayor Stanley Gibson, whom Billingsley has known for a long time thanks to his previous work on transportation projects in that area with the Central Arizona Association of Governments.
