The NHL might have come up against another roadblock in its attempt to keep the Phoenix Coyotes in Arizona: Glendale mayor-elect Jerry Weiers, according to an online report.
A Republican who has been critical of the lease agreement between the Coyotes and the City of Glendale as well as a proposed tax increase that was being used to fund the arena deal, Weiers delivered a warning to the NHL (and MLB teams that have spring-training sites in the area) after defeating opponent Manuel Cruz in the polls Tuesday night, saying “Glendale is not your cash register.”
“We all love the Coyotes and Cactus League but we cannot sacrifice our way of life so they can maintain theirs,” Weiers said.
Keeping the Coyotes in Glendale would cost the city millions of dollars if the sale to Greg Jamison goes through. Money would be raised through a sales tax increase that city council passed in August.
On Tuesday, voters rejected a rollback in the sales tax increase. The increased tax money will also prevent layoffs to firefighters and cops.
