Casa Grande council race shapes up

Casa Grande Dispatch

Casa Grande City Hall

One challenger had filed for election to the Casa Grande City Council by Wednesday’s filing deadline. Four candidates filed for three open council seats in the March 12 primary election.

Martin E. Schmidt, a Mission Royale resident, filed to run against incumbent Councilmen Matt Herman, Ralph Varela and Dick Powell, who all filed for reelection. Mayor Bob Jackson filed for reelection and faces no opponent.

To be on the ballot, a candidate must obtain the signatures of 171 Casa Grande residents who are registered voters. Any candidate receiving a majority of the votes cast in the primary election will be declared elected without running in the May 21 general election.

The mayor, with a monthly salary of $1,241, serves a two-year term and is limited to four terms. Council members, who are paid $698 a month, serve four-year terms with no term limits.
