Mesa Mayor Scott Smith is joining the Campaign to Fix the Debt as a member of its steering committee. The national, nonpartisan group of lawmakers and others is calling for the federal government to find a long-term solution to the nation’s debt and deficit problems.
The group was founded by former Clinton White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former Wyoming Republican U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson, who co-chaired the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which was created in 2010 by President Barack Obama. On the steering committee, Smith will join former U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H.; Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat; former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat; and Honeywell chairman and CEO Dave Cote.
Smith was recently elected as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
