Arizona’s newest member of Congress, Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, has won a coveted position on the powerful House Financial Services Committee after winning a swing district for her party
this fall.
It’s rare for a freshman to be appointed to the committee, which oversees economic policy, banking, housing, insurance and other financial matters.
The move follows the ouster of Arizona Republican Rep. David Schweikert from the committee. Schweikert, who was a freshman when he joined the committee two years ago, accused GOP leaders of kicking him off for not toeing the party line. Republicans had to give up a seat on the committee because of the Democrats’ seat gains in the election.
Sinema said Thursday that she will work to create jobs for Arizonans faced with home foreclosures and economic challenges.
