ELOY – It was once supposed to be a drive-through zoo and amusement park. But these days, it’s just another distressed property in Pinal County.
Here in Eloy, halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, the remnants of the drive-through zoo can still be seen from Interstate 10: towering cages in pastel pink and turquoise, rows of massive tires in the sand, odd sculptures arising from the ground.
And then there is the newest addition to the property: a for-sale sign. The drive-through zoo is back on the market. It’s zoned for industrial use and perhaps one day, instead of a zoo, a distribution center will be built there.
“It’s a well-situated property. It’s got good freeway visibility. It’s got good access to the (Interstate 8) interchange,” said Kirk McCarville, Pinal County specialist with Land Advisors, which is handling the listing.
He was standing on the 157-acre site, which is about a stone’s throw from I-10. Traffic sped by as he outlined the land’s selling points.
“Maybe we can get some manufacturing or distribution in here and create some jobs and tax base for the city of Eloy,” he said.
In many ways, though, the site is a tough sell.
