Benson’s prime location as a gateway to so many attractions throughout Cochise County, along with its intriguing history and friendly people create the ideal formula for prosperity. Yet, despite those features, the city is enduring a distressed economy, high unemployment and sluggish housing market.
“We’re looking at the economic climate in our community and surrounding areas and seeing what we can do to help,” said Lupe Diaz, president of the Benson/San Pedro Valley Chamber of Commerce. “We know the town is struggling right now, but a lot of our members are optimistic about things that are going on that will help the area’s economic growth,” Diaz added.
Two recently installed billboards that the city purchased to promote Benson is one new feature that both Diaz and George Scott, director of Southeast Arizona Economic Development Group, applaud. “It’s one positive step in the right direction,” Diaz said.
