Whether everyone likes it or not, medical marijuana is here to stay. The voters have spoken. The courts have spoken. And now Arizona residents who suffer from illnesses that could be combatted by the use of the drug can use it.
For cities like Coolidge, it is now important to keep up with the changing legal atmosphere in the state, often dealing with ordinances that are completely new, leading to loopholes that need to be fixed. That is what city council attempted to do Jan. 28 when they passed an amendment to city code allowing a medical marijuana dispensary to deliver the product to customers personally.
According to Growth Management Director Rick Miller, it is unclear why the restriction on medical marijuana delivery was established in the first place, as the members of the planning and zoning committee could not remember the reasons.
“It was an oversight,” Miller said. “I think the intentions were good, but it did result in some problems.”
