Florence joining Maricopa association to link with San Tan Valley

Rather than join its Pinal County neighbors in a new “metropolitan planning organization” (MPO), Florence is joining the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) MPO to be in the same group as San Tan Valley.

The Florence Town Council voted to join the MAG MPO in a special meeting Monday night.

The council had voted in January to join the cities of Casa Grande, Eloy and Coolidge, and Pinal County in the new Sun Corridor MPO being formed by Casa Grande. The group will serve as the leader on transportation planning, air quality goals and eventually other issues of mutual concern.

At the time, Florence’s resolution specified that San Tan Valley and the Superstition Vistas planning area be included as well.

Town staff then learned around the first week of February that San Tan Valley is already a part of MAG. The council held a special meeting Monday to decide if it wanted to stay in the Sun Corridor or join San Tan Valley in MAG.
