With a new mayor and new councilmembers, the city can now welcome another familiar face to a new council position. Councilmember Yvonne Knaack was chosen as the new vice mayor during a Feb. 2 regular council meeting. Councilmember Manny Martinez had earlier nominated Knaack for the position during a council workshop Feb. 5. No other nominations for a vice mayor were made at that time.
The vice mayor performs the duties of the mayor during the mayor’s absence. City council guidelines require councilmembers to nominate candidates for vice mayor each year.
Interestingly, Knaack will be Glendale’s first female vice mayor. The charter first established the vice mayor position in 1988. The role, though prestigious, was not necessarily something Knaack longed for.
