Money has been flowing into the coffers of several Phoenix City Council candidates, signaling a bank-busting primary season could be just around the corner.
Last week, candidates running in the Aug. 27 primary election were required to file finance reports showing their contributions and expenses through February. Four council seats are up for election this year — districts 2, 4, 6 and 8.
The reports reflect what Phoenix political observers have expected: Highly competitive, expensive fights are taking shape in the races for districts 4 and 8.
District 8, which encompasses much of south Phoenix, is shaping up to be the most expensive campaign this cycle. The seat is held by Councilman Michael Johnson, who cannot run again due to term limits.
