Glendale city manager is likely to resign

Glendale acting City Manager Horatio Skeete is expected to resign his position as the city’s top administrator following a performance review conducted by the City Council during an executive session Tuesday.

The city attorney verbally resigned following a similar closed-door session last week.

It was not immediately known whether Skeete will leave the city altogether or seek to return to his previous position of assistant city manager. He has filled the top spot on an interim basis since former City Manager Ed Beasley resigned last June.

Skeete could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

The action continues a whirlwind of personnel moves in the West Valley city since Mayor Jerry Weiers and three other new council members took office in January. City Attorney Craig Tindall offered to resign during last week’s closed-door session but has yet to formalize that in writing.

The council members were mostly split on the positions: Weiers, Norma Alvarez and Ian Hugh supported Skeete and opposed Tindall. Vice Mayor Yvonne Knaack, Manny Martinez and Gary Sherwood opposed Skeete and supported Tindall.

Council member Sam Chavira said he opposed both. “I always said during my campaign that we needed to move forward. This is part of our moving forward. You can see that I’m consistent in my position,” he told The Republic on Wednesday.

Skeete’s next move largely is his own, Weiers said.
