Mayor Jerry Weiers predicted a positive future for Glendale in his State of the City address Thursday without much mention of the city’s budget woes or the ambiguity surrounding the Phoenix Coyotes’ future in the West Valley.
Weiers took the stage at the Glendale Civic Center after Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill spoke briefly and raised hope the NFL team’s summer training camp would move to University of Phoenix Stadium, in the city’s sports and entertainment district.
Weiers, who replaced 20-year Mayor Elaine Scruggs less than two months ago, said he wants to transform Glendale into “the most business-friendly city.” The former state lawmaker announced that he would form an advisory council on business development, which would make recommendations about how to spur business and job growth.
About 300 Glendale Chamber of Commerce members, politicians and corporate sponsors turned out for the address, which took place at the chamber’s annual business meeting. Tickets were $70.
