A 20-year moratorium on new uranium mines on 1 million acres of federal lands near the Grand Canyon hasn’t stopped a new claim from being filed.

The reason: The mine is being proposed on state land, which is not covered in the withdrawal.

Two international mining and exploration companies propose to combine forces and drill for uranium just off the main road into Havasupai, between the trailhead into Supai and Hualapai land.

Wate Mining Company, owned by Uranium One and Vane Minerals, has filed plans with the state to drill 1,600 feet deep for uranium on state land located 4 1/2 miles off Indian Route 18.
