A contingent of representatives from Eloy city government and the Eloy business community spoke at last week’s Pinal County Board of Supervisors meeting in Florence. The message they brought was loud and clear: The Union Pacific Railroad Classification Yard is strongly supported in Eloy.
Representatives from the Eloy City Council, the Economic Development Group of Eloy (EDGE), Union Pacific Railroad, and others spoke in support of the project.
The group came to put their voices behind a Pinal County Board of Supervisors resolution requesting Governor Jan Brewer to direct the Arizona State Land Department to auction the property that is needed for the project, and to do it within six months. The board unanimously approved the resolution, and according to a press release from Pinal County, Union Pacific has been waiting six years for the State to act on the land located north of Red Rock and east of Interstate 10.
“Union Pacific has been very patient during this time,” Chairman Steve Miller said in the release. He added that the railroad classification yard would create jobs and is a project that Arizona doesn’t want to lose. “We cannot have that happen,” he stated.
Board member Pete Rios, who is in support of the project, said the Board of Supervisors created a similar resolution just one year ago.
