Arizona Public Service Co. President and COO Don Robinson died of cancer this morning at the age of 59.
APS spokesman Alan Bunnell confirmed Robinson’s death to the Phoenix Business Journal Thursday morning, and said he had been battling cancer for a long time. He said employees have been notified and more information will be released later today on the executive’s passing.
Robinson stepped down from daily executive activities last year while battling the illness. He still served as a special executive advisor to Phoenix-based utility and retained his president and COO titles.
Robinson joined APS in 1978 and held various management posts with the utility. He was also involved with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Fiesta Bowl, Valley of the Sun United Way, the Gompers Habilitation Center, Herberger Theater and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Robinson was also a principal with Micon Inc., an energy consulting firm.

As Arizona grew and modernized in recent decades, Don was at the forefront through his work at Arizona Public Service. Thanks in part to his efforts, APS has become one of the nation’s premier utilities – providing safe and secure power to more than 1 million Arizonans.
“Of course, Don was more than just an exceptional businessman. He was an admired colleague; a husband, father and grandfather; and a dear friend to those lucky enough to have known him. Though Don has passed, his legacy and service to Arizona won’t be forgotten.
“I ask that Arizonans please join me in extending our deepest prayers and sympathies to his loved ones.”
