Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett has asked to be dismissed from a lawsuit by a group that’s trying to halt a recall effort against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, AP reports.
A lawyer for Bennett says in court papers the dismissal request should be granted because none of the pro-Arpaio group’s legal claims are leveled against Bennett and that his office isn’t responsible for handling recall efforts against county officials.
The lawsuit was filed against the group seeking the recall, Bennett and county elections officials.
The group seeking the recall has predicted the lawsuit will get tossed out of court.
Recall organizers say they have collected 200,000 of the 335,000 valid voter signatures needed by May 30 to force a recall election.
