The controversial civil union ordinance recognizing same-sex couples and granting them the same benefits as married heterosexual couples within the Bisbee city limits is now on hold and may not go into effect on May 2.
The city council approved the same-sex civil union ordinance on April 2, and it was scheduled to be enacted in 30 days.
Now that enactment is on hold as City Attorney John MacKinnon tweaks the wording of the ordinance to better reflect and clarify the intent of the council to recognize civil unions within the city limits, as determined by the city council during a special meeting held Thursday night.
