Sierra Vista Herald Review
Water and residential development would seem to be competing forces that shape the future of Southern Arizona.
Specifically, recent news items call our attention to the ongoing question of how Sierra Vista and its environs will address the hope for continued growth in the face of those who see any further development as negatively impacting the San Pedro River.
Tuesday, the Arizona Department of Water Resources confirmed an earlier decision that Pueblo Del Sol is entitled to a 100-year water adequacy permit, following objections that were argued before an administrative judge. Opponents, including Dr. Robin Silver and the Center for Biological Diversity, argue future growth will eventually cause the death of the San Pedro by lowering the aquifer and causing harm to existing wildlife and plant life.
On the other side of the coin, Sierra Vista and Cochise County officials point out the plentiful past and ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of water consumption and to recharge the aquifer.
