On that day Gabby Giffords first spoke out so eloquently about the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., and her commitment to the issue of reducing gun violence, I knew the movement would no longer see just a fleeting success. I heard in her voice and

that of her husband Mark the sincerity and determination to make this a long-term commitment.

We all remember that terrible tragedy in Tucson, Ariz., and those we lost, but few actually know the grit, pain, tenacity and strong will it took Gabby to emerge as the lovely spokeswoman and face of the gun-violence-prevention movement. This issue is unlike all others, as it takes those very qualities to fight the large gun lobby with its unending source of revenue. It is indeed David vs. Goliath. Gabby has all the qualities it takes, along with the extraordinary commitment, to show us what a David she is.
