The Arizona Cardinals’ progress toward relocating the team’s training camp appears stalled with no definite final destination in sight.
The team’s desire to move its camp from Flagstaff to Glendale bogged down weeks ago when Cardinals executives asked Glendale officials for a new parking garage as part of the deal, according to Glendale officials.
There was virtually no willingness among Glendale’s seven city council members to entertain that idea, according to several who spoke to The Arizona Republic. The sides are still talking, but council members said no alternative offers have been brought forward.
“I’d love to have the training facility, if it’s a benefit to Glendale,” Vice Mayor Yvonne Knaack told The Arizona Republic. “But it can’t be one-sided; it’s got to be a mutually accepted agreement between both parties. And I would tell you, it’s just not the way it’s going right now.”
A spokesman for the team said the Cardinals have tried to merge discussions about training camp with the team’s desire to see progress toward a “credible plan” for a long-term approach for parking, but said the Cardinals have not suggested the city build a parking garage immediately.
