Nevada Assembly Bills 166 and 167 are dubbed the “Screw Bullhead City” bills by Bullhead City Council Member Sam Medrano.
If passed and signed by the governor, they would require out of state residents who work in Nevada to pay an annual fee to bring their vehicles to work. The bills are designed only to affect border towns like Bullhead, Medrano said. Thousands of Bullhead City residents are employed by Laughlin casino resorts as well as other businesses and agencies on the Nevada side of the Colorado River.
At Tuesday’s Bullhead City Council meeting, Medrano played excerpts totalling 48 seconds, in which members of the Assembly’s Transportation Committee specifically mentioned Bullhead City, saying its residents do not contribute to the Nevada economy. That’s “incorrect” and “offensive,” said Medrano.
He said the Bullhead City River Regatta pumps $9 million into the Nevada economy. Council Member Jerry Duvall suggested the council send a letter to the Nevada Assembly and perhaps visit in person. Medrano agreed that may be necessary. He said the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce is opposed to the legislation, as well as the Laughlin Town Advisory Board.
