Study: EPA rules will fuel shift away from coal

A new study finds that Environmental Protection Agency pollution rules could increasingly prompt power companies to abandon coal and turn to natural gas — even if gas prices soar above their currently low levels.

The U.S. shale gas production boom has driven down prices and helped boost the share of electricity generated with the fuel, mostly at coal’s expense.

But Duke University researchers show that even if gas prices rise significantly, EPA rules coming into effect to further curb smog- and soot-forming pollution and control air toxics will continue to make gas more attractive in many cases.
