APS, other utilities grapple with disruptive technologies

Arizona Public Service Co. and its ongoing disagreements with the solar industry likely won’t end this summer.

Instead, much like other industries that have grappled with technology disruption in the wake of the Great Recession, this could be the opening salvo in a longer war that pits a smaller, nimble industry against utilities that are trying to keep the status quo.

Don’t take my word for it. The MIT Technology Review wrote about it today and how utilities are trying to deal with an increase in solar that is a threat to their business model.

For those interested in how seriously utilities are taking this threat, spend a little time reading the Edison Electric Institute’s paper, “Disruptive Challenges: Financial Implications and Strategic Responses to a Changing Retail Electric Business.” Edison is one of the leading utility groups, and the paper isn’t too long, nor is it written in wonk-speak. Here’s an example.
