The death of Central Arizona College Governing Board President Linda Yarrington on Sunday of complications from cancer means the county school superintendent will appoint a new board member.

Yarrington, 63, had represented the Apache Junction and Gold Canyon area on the board since January 2009. She became board president this year.

College President Doris Helmich said Yarrington was a “wonderful person,” always had a smile, was dedicated to CAC’s mission and looked forward to student awards and graduations. “We’re going to miss her. That’s for sure.”

Governing Board members are elected, but not paid, Helmich said, but Yarrington gave her role as a board member “100 percent and was very honored to be the president this year.”

Helmich said Governing Board Vice President and Secretary Rita Nader will become board president. Pinal County School Superintendent Jill Broussard will appoint someone from District 5 to sit on the board until Dec. 31, 2014. A new board member will be elected in the November 2014 general elec- tion.

A vigil service for Yarrington is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at St. George Catholic Church, 300 E. 16th Ave. in Apache Junction (off South Winchester Road). A memorial service is set for June 1 in St. Paul, Neb.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the CAC Foundation in care of the Linda Yarrington Memorial Fund.
