Former Mesa Mayor Wayne Brown, who led the city’s drive to build a world-class performing arts center in the heart of the city’s downtown, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was 76.
Brown served as mayor from 1996 to 2000 and spearheaded a 1998 quality-of-life bond issue that helped pay for the center.
After he left office, he and his wife, Kathye, continued a private fundraising campaign for the center, bringing in more than $4.5 million.
A sculpture courtyard in the center is named for him.
“Wayne was a visionary leader who believed in Mesa and was passionate about its future,” Mayor Scott Smith said in a city statement announcing Brown’s death. “Although he will be greatly missed, I am pleased that his legacy will continue to live on at the Mesa Arts Center’s Brown Sculpture Courtyard. He was a great example of positive civic leadership.”
