Maricopa suffering from greener pastures syndrome

After four years of working for the city of Maricopa, Nicole Dailey decided it was time to move on.

greener-pasturesIn March 2011, Dailey, now 30, left her job as assistant to the city manager and took a position in the town of Gilbert — a larger community where she could advance her career.

“It was the right time and the right opportunity,” she said.

For Maricopa, Dailey’s story is all-too familiar. A growing economy that’s creating new opportunities in both the public and private sectors is having an adverse effect on City Hall.

City Manager Brenda Fischer said the effects of turnover — a trend felt in other cities because of the economic recovery — are magnified by the city’s small size.

“We have such a lean staffing,” Fischer said.
