The Phoenix City Council has endorsed a proposed federal immigration overhaul that would create a 13-year road to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living illegally in the United States.
The council cast the symbolic vote Tuesday in support of the legislation approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. It was crafted by the so-called Senate Gang of 8 that includes Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake.
Dozens of immigration proponents attended the meeting and urged council members to back the overhaul.
Immigration activists also scheduled a rally in downtown Phoenix after the council vote to show support for the overhaul.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has been a vocal critic of Arizona’s landmark anti-illegal immigration law. He says Arizona should support diversity.
