Sahuarita looks at annexation of Red Point land

Sahuarita LakeBy Becky Pallack | Arizona Daily Star

The Sahuarita Town Council could give its final approval Monday to annex 215 acres of vacant land at the southeast corner of Interstate 19 and Pima Mine Road.

It would be the town’s first large annexation since the recession began.

The annexation would complete the northwest side of the town and open chances to attract new employers, said Sahuarita economic development manager Kathy Ward.

The land is owned by Tucson-based Red Point Development, which bought the land from Asarco in 2004 for $2.6 million.

Red Point plans commercial buildings along Pima Mine Road and housing compatible with next-door Rancho Sahuarita, said general manager Larry Kreis.

The proposed projects are several years away. The property would keep its current residential zoning if it becomes part of the town, and Red Point must go through the town’s rezoning and development processes.

Red Point has developed housing projects in Tucson, Oro Valley and Marana.
