Surprise Councilman Mike Woodard will step down June 1.
Woodard notified City Clerk Sherry Aguilar in a May 7 memo that he plans to vacate his seat. The letter was given to council members and city officials Wednesday morning.
“Well, after almost five decades of civic involvement and service within the communities where I have lived, the time has come to retire,” the councilman wrote.
The news comes less than two months after Woodard announced March 26 that he would not seek re-election.
Woodard was elected to City Council in 2009. His current term ends Dec. 31.
