This year’s Cave Creek Town Council election is in the books and campaign finance reports reveal that candidates spent more than $50,000 during this election cycle — an unprecedented amount in town politics.
Some say this contest might have opened the door to a new age of campaign spending in Cave Creek.
The challengers, who now make up a majority of the council, were the overwhelming contributors to this pot.
The final post-general election campaign-finance reports were filed by June 20, giving a wider picture of candidates’ donations and spending since the beginning of the year.
Statement by Vice Mayor Adam Trenk: “The days of the people allowing the Sonoran News’ propaganda to roll over them are over. If that means grassroots groups and candidates need to spend money beyond the ‘minimal’ amount, then that’s what it means.
“I imagine the time will come when the biased and poisoned pen of the Sonoran News will cease to be a factor, and fair, balanced, and equal coverage of local political figures and events will return to Cave Creek. When that happens, the need for candidates to spend the amount of money spent in this election will likely recede.”
