A proposed Chandler development with amenities that would have catered to the Muslim community drew vocal opposition from neighbors, but the Chandler City Council voted it down Thursday over concerns about traffic problems it might create in the neighborhood, members said.
The council unanimously denied the proposed Mumtaz community, which would have had 66 townhouses on about 6 acres near the southeastern corner of McQueen and Willis roads.
Traffic flow and the development’s density dominated the council’s discussion Thursday, though many neighbors brought up concerns about the prayer room in the plan.
“One of Chandler’s strengths is the diversity of our community, and I really hate to do anything that discourages that kind of diversity, but … the traffic flow there just really creates some problems,” Vice Mayor Jack Sellers said Friday.
