Leave it to Jason Rose to come up with an 11.2-kilometer race in the middle of Phoenix’s hottest weather.
Dubbed The Hottest Race on Earth, the Beat the Heat event is set for 2:47 p.m. on June 22 at WestWorld in Scottsdale. Rose picked that particular time because that’s when the temperatures soared to 122 degrees in Phoenix back on June 26, 1990, which is still a record.
June 26 falls on a Wednesday this year, so Rose moved the event to the closest Saturday and the day after the Summer Solstice begins.
Rose, founder of Rose+Moser+Allyn Public & Online Relations in Scottsdale, remembers that day, when 22 flights were canceled at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, two-thirds of the city’s bus fleet stopped working and one airline worker reported that the soles of his shoes and his rubber gloves melted.
